National Fitness Month

May is National Fitness Month!

Regular physical activity and physical fitness are important to one's health, sense of well-being, and maintenance of a healthy body weight. When one is physically fit, he can better meet the demands of work and leisure comfortably.

The following are key recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2005.

  • Engage in regular physical activity and reduce sedentary activities to promote health, psychological well-being, and a healthy body weight.
  • To reduce the risk of chronic disease in adulthood, engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity, above usual daily activity, e.g., walking at your normal pace.
  • To help manage body weight and prevent gradual, unhealthy weight gain in adulthood, engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate - vigorous intensity activity on most days of the week.
  • Achieve physical fitness by including cardiovascular conditioning, stretching exercises for flexibility, and resistance exercises for muscle strength and endurance.
  • Children and adolescents should engage in at least 60 minute of physical activity on most, preferably all, days of the week.
