Celebrate ERM’s 20th Anniversary
Join the County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management in celebrating its 20-year anniversary by visiting one of the County’s natural areas for a guided tour on Saturday, October 27. Four natural areas with public use facilities will be showcased: Jupiter Ridge, Royal Palm Beach Pines, High Ridge Scrub and Yamato Scrub. Tours will be conducted at each location, rain or shine, at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. The natural area system is one of ERM’s most successful programs, encompassing over 35,000 aces of environmentally sensitive lands in Palm Beach County purchased with taxpayer supported bond dollars. Natural areas are open for self-guided tours from sunrise to sunset, seven days a week, including holidays. For 20 years, ERM has worked to protect, preserve and enhance the land and water resources for the residents and visitors to Palm Beach County. The Department has come a long way from humble beginnings.
4th Annual Families Reading Together Campaign
immersed in the culture that families read to their children just as they feed and clothe them.
Now imagine all families in Palm Beach County with preschoolers, Kindergarten, and 1st grade students reading the same book. "A Splendid Friend, Indeed!" by Suzanne Bloom, is the title selected for our 4th Annual Families Reading Together Campaign.
The title selected for the Families Reading Together Campaign will be announced at the Palm Beach County School District's Family Literacy Day Luncheon, on November 1 at the Airport Hilton, where invited children and their parents will receive a copy of this very special book. The campaign is sponsored by the Palm Beach County Library System, the School District of Palm Beach County, the Children's Service Council, the Palm Beach County Literacy Coalition, Target, The Palm Beach Post, Barnes & Noble, the Palm Beach Zoo, the Norton Museum of Art, and the Friends of the Palm Beach County Library System.
This year's Families Reading Together Campaign is part of the 9th Annual Children's Book Week Celebration (November 11-17). This is a national event, which serves to remind the community about the importance of encouraging children to read, as well as to inspire the love of reading.

Fire-Rescue Employee Wins National Award
Sergio Ornelas of Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue recently received two national video awards. As the studio coordinator with Fire-Rescue, he produced two videos that were submitted to the National Telly Awards organization. The “Tellys”, similar to the well-known Academy Awards, recognizes videos of outstanding quality in the areas of TV commercials and other media categories. Ornelas produced two programs, one on exercise and fitness titled “Cable Workout” and another about firefighter awareness and safety, “Icynene Case Study.” The latter was done with the assistance of District Chief Curtis Rice. Out of 12,000 entries representing all 50 states and many countries around the world, Ornelas received two bronze (second place) Telly awards. The video department at Fire-Rescue has numerous national honors in the past and is proud to have Ornelas on the team.
