Office of Small Business Assistance Offers Cornerstone Certification Program

The Office of Small Business Assistance (OSBA) is offering free business training and counseling designed to help Palm Beach County’s small businesses become more profitable.

The Cornerstone Certification Program is a free, 12-hour training course that includes management and technical assistance. The program serves new businesses seeking county certification as a small business enterprise.

A variety of live courses are being offered at the Small Business Development Center at Florida Atlantic University. Students may choose a combination of courses. Some recommended classes include marketing, finance, procurement and business planning. Course fees will be waived for students who bring to class a printout of a county certification application, which can be downloaded at: http://www.pbcgov.com/osba/programs/certification/pdf/ApplicationForm.pdf. Students may register online at www.fausbdc.com. Click on the “training tab” to find a complete schedule of upcoming classes.

Live Homework Help connects students to tutors in math, science, social studies and English via the Internet. Spanish-speaking tutors are also available. Students in grades 4th through 12th, as well as college students, are eligible.

More than 7,000 Palm Beach County students completed live homework help sessions during the 2007-2008 school year. The service allows students to connect to an expert tutor from any Palm Beach County Library System location or their home computer with a library card. Live homework help is offered Sunday through Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m. or on Saturday from 2 to 7 p.m. Students can log on to the library’s Web site, click on the live homework help link and then enter the appropriate grade level and subject. Within minutes, students are connected to a tutor in an online classroom.

Students can receive one-on-one homework help and review specific homework questions, as well as subject-specific concepts using features such as controlled chat, an interactive white board and shared Web browsing in an online classroom. All tutors are certified teachers, college professors and professional tutors from across the county. Every tutor is certified by Tutor.com and has completed a third party background check.
