Announcement: Palm Beach County has created the Department of Economic Sustainability (DES), combining programs for business development, housing, and community initiatives. This department's mission is:
To advance community sustainability by increasing economic competitveness and improving the elements that create a high quality of life for Palm Beach County's residents.

- Palm Beach County is the largest of Florida’s 67 counties. Under the U.S. Census, the County is part of the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton Metropolitan Area and its 2000 population of 1,131,184 ranked third in the State.
- Per the 2000 Census, the 1,131,184 year-round population is composed of: 41.8 median age; 65 years and older total 262,076 (23%); 18 years and older total 890,726 (79%); males 46,739 (48%); females 584,445 (52%); white 894,207 (79%); black 156,055 (14%) and other 80,922 (7%). Included in that racial breakdown is the fast expanding Hispanic origin population numbering 140,675 (12% of total population).
