Land Acquisition/Preservation

 
  • Developed eleven successful grant proposals for state Preservation 2000 matching funds for acquisition of environmentally sensitive lands and received $37.4 million in state matching funds.
  • Coordinated the provision of $6.3 million in matching funds for land acquisition from the City of Boca Raton and the City of Boynton Beach and the Indian Trail Improvement District
  • Coordinated approval of $2 million in mitigation funds from other agencies for acquisitions of environmentally sensitive lands in Unit 11
  • Currently manage or cooperate in the management of 28 sites, totaling 27,986 acres
  • Obtained management leases/agreements from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management for the Jupiter Inlet Natural Area; from the State of Florida for the Jupiter Ridge Natural Area; from the State of Florida and the Florida Inland Navigation District for a portion of the Juno Hills Natural Area; and from the Village of Royal Palm Beach and the Saratoga at Royal Palm Homeowners' Association for the Royal Palm Beach Pines Natural Area
  • Provided technical assistance to the Planning Division in the successful application to the state Office of Greenways and Trails for a $1,000,000 grant to purchase the Lake Okeechobee Connector site
  • Provided technical assistance to the City of Boca Raton, the City of Delray Beach, and the City of West Palm Beach for the submission of four applications for state matching funds for land acquisition, all of which were successful
  • Received grant awards from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service for a five-year restoration project on the Juno Hills Oceanfront parcel of the Juno Hills Natural Area and from the American Forests group for a native plant restoration project on the Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area.
  • Assisted the City of West Palm Beach in selection of a site for a proposed nature center and in various land acquisition activities for lands adjacent to the Water Catchment Area
  • Formed and chaired a Land Stewardship Committee for the Florida Local Environmental Resource Agencies group
  • Participated in the formation of a Tri-County Land Managers' group with natural areas staffs from Broward County and Dade County
  • Awarded $995,354 in Grant money from the DEP for the control of aquatic exotic plants in the Chain of lakes (Lakes Osborne, Ida, Eden, Pine, and Clarke).
