Natural Areas Management

 
  • Developed the Natural Areas Stewardship Endowment Fund Ordinance and received a donation of $2 million from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to provide initial funds for the Natural Areas Stewardship Endowment Fund
  • Formed the Natural Areas Management Advisory Committee and conducted public hearings for six management plans
  • Successfully conducted prescribed burns on 17 natural areas for a total of 950 acres.
  • Completed Palm beach Islands exotic plant removal and native plant installation.
  • Completed the evaluation of seagrasses in association with dredging at South Lake Worth Inlet.
  • In 2000, work was completed on the Jupiter Inlet Natural Area restoration project. This project included removal of 3.5 acres of exotic vegetation, excavation of 20,000 cubic yards of spoil, and planting approximately 2.5 acres of red mangroves.
  • Pond Apple Habitat Freshwater Restoration was completed in 2000 and involved removal of 2 acres of exotic vegetation, and installation of a large variety of herbaceous species within the 2.5 acre area.
  • Work was completed of the Light Harbor Seagrass Restoration Project. Monitoring will be ongoing until 2004.
  • Frenchman's Forest Natural Area restoration was completed in 2002 and consisted of removal of over 25 acres of exotic vegetation, planting of 14 acres of native plants, and construction of boardwalks, kiosk and natural trails.
