DUBOIS PARK RESTORATION PROJECT INFORMATION SHEET
| What is the current situation at Dubois Park? |
Natural forces and manmade alterations caused the Dubois Park tidal creek to meander to a point where the parking and recreation areas of Dubois and Jupiter Beach County Parks were threatened. Siltation within the lagoon reduced tidal flushing and restricted seagrass growth. |
| What does the project entail? |
The intitial project in 1999 utilized sand-filled geotextile bags to realign and stabilize the two outer bends of the tidal creek. Additional bags to be placed in 2005 will elevate one area for better protection from storm waves and replace damaged bags.
Approximately 10,000 cubic yards of material will be dredged from a 1.2 acre area within the lagoon to encourage seagrass recruitment and improve water quality. |
| Why are sandbags being used? |
Sand bags are being used in lieu of rock boulders since many small children use this area for swimming and wading. It is believed that rock boulders would present a safety hazard in such an intensely used recreational area. |
| Who is responsible for the project? |
The Dubois Park Shoreline Protection/Environmental Enhancement Project is being funded by the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department. Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management is responsible for managing all aspects of the project. |
| How long will the project take? |
The project is expected to take four weeks to complete. |
| Who benefits from the project? |
All Palm Beach County residents and visitors who use Dubois Park and Jupiter Inlet Park will enjoy a more stable, natural tidal creek system than exists today. Juvenile fishes, seagreasses, and mangroves are among the many marine plants and animals that will benefit from the environmental enhancement aspects of this project. |
