South Lake Worth Inlet History
- Also referred to as the Boynton Inlet.
- Created in 1925 to “flush” the Lake Worth Lagoon.
- The sand transfer plant installed in 1937 was the first of its kind in the nation.
- The original plant was replaced in 1967.
- Extension of the north jetty was completed in 1967.
- Bird Island (once known as "Beer Can Island") located within the inlet was restored in 1996.

Project Location
The Problem
- The old sand transfer plant was structurally unsound and losing efficiency.
- The jetty crib structures and deck were damaged beyond repair.
- The seawall on the south side of Bird Island was failing.
The Solution-Beginning in 2009
- Build a new sand transfer plant.
- Build new crib structures and decks over the existing north and south jetties
- Build a new seawall in front of the existing seawall at Bird Island.
