South Lake Worth Inlet History

  • Also referred to as the Boynton Inlet.
  • Created in 1925 to “flush” the Lake Worth Lagoon.
  • The sand transfer plant installed in 1937 was the first of its kind in the nation.
  • The original plant was replaced in 1967.
  • Extension of the north jetty was completed in 1967.
  • Bird Island (once known as "Beer Can Island") located within the inlet was restored in 1996.

Project Location

The Problem

  • The old sand transfer plant was structurally unsound and losing efficiency.
  • The jetty crib structures and deck were damaged beyond repair.
  • The seawall on the south side of Bird Island was failing.

The Solution-Beginning in 2009

  • Build a new sand transfer plant.
  • Build new crib structures and decks over the existing north and south jetties
  • Build a new seawall in front of the existing seawall at Bird Island.
