The Jupiter Inlet Natural Area Wetland Construction Project was completed in December 1999. This 2-year, $135,000 project has resulted in a new 2 acre tidal wetland. Just two years ago, spoil piles stood choked with exotic Australian pine trees. Upon entering the channel to the Indian River, the lagoon has crystal clear water flowing through the tidal ponds and channels and has become a favorite haunt for osprey and shore birds, already fulfilling its purpose as a nursery for a myriad of fish. The crowning glory of the project has been the observation of two manatees during a recent manatee census flight.

The inlet to the Indian River Lagoon has been signed and chained to close the area to motorized boats. Canoes and kayaks are welcome, however. The projects were funded by two South Florida Water Management District grants totaling $70,000 and were matched by $50,000 from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management provided in-kind services including managing the project and directing volunteers for planting approximately 6,000 mangroves.
