Pawpaw Natural Area

Four-petal pawpaw flower

Region: Northern Palm Beach County

Size: 3 acres

Hours: Daily from sunrise to sunset

Location:
East side of Ellison Wilson Road at Vista Drive, approximately 0.1 mile north of PGA Boulevard, near Palm Beach Gardens. Ellison Wilson Road is approximately 0.2 mile west of U.S. Highway 1.

Public Use Facilities:
None at present; hiking, photography, wildlife viewing, and other passive recreation activities are allowed on the site. There are no restroom facilities or drinking water on the natural area.

Site Information:
The natural area contains one native Florida ecosystem - Florida scrub. The property was deeded to Palm Beach County in 1998 as a preserve set-aside for development of an adjacent property. Although it is small, it contains a number of four-petal pawpaw plants. This species is listed as endangered by both federal and state agencies because of its rarity; it is found only in Palm Beach and Martin Counties - nowhere else in the world. The natural area is part of the Northeast Everglades Natural Area.

Plants:
Plant species observed on the site include gopher apple, beggarticks, American beautyberry, partridge pea, pricklypear, shiny blueberry, and cottonweed.

Wildlife:
Animal species observed on the site include spinybacked orbweaver, cloudless sulphur, band-winged dragonlet, six-lined racerunner, gopher tortoise, blue-gray gnatcatcher, ruby-crowned kinglet, gray catbird, and northern cardinal.
