Q: Are budget cuts evenly distributed throughout the districts?
A: Generally yes, although a site-specific project, such as a new park or animal shelter that doesn’t get built, might be more sharply felt by residents in that immediate area.
Q: What is the status of reconstruction of the Pahokee Airport?
A: Funding is in place, and we are currently in the permitting process.
Q: With regard to old housing stock, if the property tax amendment passes, will small municipalities survive?
A: Some may not because they are already nearly bankrupt. Doubling the homestead exemption would take more homes off the tax rolls, i.e. less revenue for the city, while still having to provide the same levels of services.
Q: What are the effects of the foreclosure crisis on the County budget?
A: The taxes still have to be paid. (The County collects 96 to 97 percent of all taxes levied.) Sometimes the property itself is acquired as compensation, especially if it can be used to create workforce housing.
