BCC Briefs

At the August 21, 2007 Board of County Commissioners meeting, the following action was taken:

Charter Amendments – approved on first reading and advertised for public hearing on Sept. 11 an ordinance to place on the November 2008 ballot a charter amendment enabling municipalities to opt out of a countywide charter amendment, if a majority of voters in the municipality vote in favor.

Manatee Protection – approved the PBC Manatee Protection Plan, aimed at steering marina development away from manatee populations. It includes a siting plan that determines the number of new boat slips that can be constructed on waterfront properties. The County will allocate $1 million per year for marine law enforcement, public education programs and habitat restoration.

Paratransit – amended the contract with MV Transportation, Inc. which provides paratransit services in Palm Beach County. Through a series of service modifications, the contract amount was reduced by $12.7 million to $71.9 million.

Roads – agreed to abandon road rights-of-way within the Florida Fruit Lands subdivision to accommodate construction at South County Regional Park; continued to the Sept. 11 BCC meeting proposed abandonment of 30-foot and 50-foot-wide rights-of-way at Palm Beach Farms near the Sandalfoot Cove and Boca Rio Heights developments.

Fire-Rescue – approved a $1.845 million contract with McTeague Construction to build a 5,500-square-foot fire station on Flavor Pict Road between Jog and Hagan Ranch roads; adopted an ordinance to include the Town of Loxahatchee Groves within the boundaries of the Fire-Rescue MSTU.

Public Affairs – approved the hiring of Lisa De La Rionda of the Department of Airports as Director of Public Affairs. She replaces Beth Ingold-Love who passed away in June.

Budget Review – agreed to disband the seven-member Budget Advisory Committee.

Committee appointments – agreed to have BCC members serve on the following advisory panels:
Artificial Reef and Estuarine Enhancement – Jeff Koons
County Coalition for Responsible Management of Lake Okeechobee, St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee Estuaries, and Lake Worth Lagoon – Karen Marcus
Criminal Justice Commission – Burt Aaronson
Kravis Center Board of Directors – Mary McCarty
Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council (alternate) – Bob Kanjian
Workforce Alliance – Bob Kanjian
