Animal Care and Control is part of Palm Beach County Government. Our shelter was started in 1969. We are located at 7100 Belvedere Road, West Palm Beach, Florida (five miles west of I-95).

In 1974, the shelter became a division of the Public Safety Department. Programs and services were expanded to keep pace with the growing human and animal population. In 1980, the division became fully accredited by the Humane Society of the United States. Animal Care and Control was the first agency in the southeast and the second in the entire nation to achieve this distinction.

The animal services and programs offered to county residents are:

  • animal law enforcement
  • pet adoption of stray and unwanted pets
  • animal sheltering and caring of stray, unwanted, injured and sick pets
  • pet friendly shelter (disaster shelter for pets and owners)
  • computerized pet identification through the rabies license program
  • pet identification with (EAID) microchipping
  • rabies vaccinations offered to the public M-F 11:00-5:00, no appointment
  • educational programs and tours available for schools and organizations
  • humane animal trap rental service for stray cats and dogs
  • the rescue of abused domestic animals and livestock
  • livestock adoptions (horses, cows, pigs, poultry)
  • the lost and found web site SNAP
  • the volunteer program for adults and students
  • the foster care volunteer program
  • low-cost spaying and neutering for dogs and cats on the Spay Shuttle, a mobile clinic

The mission of Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control Staff and Volunteers:

  • Encourage pet owners to be responsible for pets in their care by providing educational programs on humane treatment, animal behavior training, and proper control.
  • Appropriately enforce county, state, and federal animal laws.
  • Provide safe shelter and veterinary care for lost, abandoned and unwanted animals.
  • Return to owners or adopt to new homes, as many impounded animals as possible.
  • Humanely euthanize injured and sick animals.
  • Encourage spay/neuter and provide reduced-cost surgery for Palm Beach County pet owners through our Spay Shuttle nonprofit program.
  • Conduct other effective programs, which protect the health, safety, and welfare of animals and the residents of Palm Beach County.
